Playstation 3 and the Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Boardband Router

While I initially hooked up my Playstation 3 a week ago, when I was posting to the official PS forums today, my second post, I was doing so to recommend a version of the router I'm using. Since both items are pretty popular now, it makes sense to write up a quick guide on them, I suppose.

My equipment

First off, there's my setup. I've had pretty experiences with Linksys, but poor experiences with Netgear, so Linksys I am. I've got a BEFCMU10 Cable Modem connected to a WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router (Wireless-B and -G compatible).

The setup

My router can be configured at http://192.168.1.1/ (the default).

I setup the wireless (http://192.168.1.1/wireless.htm) as follows:

  • Wireless Network Mode: Mixed
  • Wireless Channel: 6
  • Wireless SSID Broadcast: Disable
  • Security Mode: WEP
  • WEP Encryption: 64 bits 10 hex digits
  • other than a unique SSID, everything else should be defaults.
  • I did not have to do any port 'stuff' under "Applications & Gaming."

The Playstation 3 setup, with Wireless, went very smoothly. Since the router is in the same room, there's obviously 100% signal strength. While I haven't played Warhawk, I have downloaded a number of videos and demos, and have spent a deal of time surfing online. The download speeds are 'eh' but I don't know what speed it really is; files are downloading pretty quick (it would be nice to see an indication of download speeds).

I heard a number of things about the PS3 media server, so this is disabled on my machine.

Questions?

Questions/comments on the router should be left below. Please refrain from comments focusing on the Playstation 3.

Updates

I neglected to list my download/upload speeds, according to SpeedTest.net:

4.6 mb / 480 kb on my computer, but only 1.7 mb / 480 kb on my PS 3.

Encryption adds lag and bandwidth overhead.  If you are going to be using your connection for online gaming, I would suggest turning WEP/WPA off and securing your WiFi with NIC ID's.

After seeing those crummy D/L numbers, I would suggest turning off encryption and retesting.

do you lag at all while gaming online? choppy or smooth?

I'm pretty smooth, however, I did recently switch to a wired connection.

While I had no problems with wireless, I wanted as much as I could while I was playing Warhawk. The only time I run into issues with that game is when others with high ping are in attendance.

If you're running into issues Jon, you may want to check the offical Playstation forums - boardsus.playstation.com/.../board - for assistance.

i have linksys wrt54gs (with speed booster).( had version 2.2 but upgraded to .atest version for that system i think its 4.something.) Its working there for past 3 years.

All works fine UNTIL i connect the ps3.

My wireless network goes down. My 2 laptops(wireless) and my desktop (directly wired).

I have to plug out the modem and the router for about 5 mins each..and then boot up router first then linksys. its REALLY annoying.

So any ideas, its either the ps3 or the laptops/desktop. It seems to just cut off everything ie the ps3 does something.

Thanks.

Matt, are you using a wired or wireless connection for your PS3? The first thing most people will tell you is to try switching the connection type (wired to wireless, and vice versa).

I have a problem with the WRT54G wireless router. My PC and PS3 (60 GB) are both connected wireless with this router. The PC works just fine.

The PS3 however, has some problems.

- The connection with the Playstation Network is very unstable. I can't stay connected for more than a few minutes.

- I can download PS3 firmware updates and things from the Playstation Store, but game updates (like the latest PAIN or GTA4 updates) are almost impossible to download. The download stops and I get a Error message.

I have contacted Sony about these problems and they gave me a list of router and PS3 settings. The settings were already correct.

Can it be a defect in the PS3? Sony offered to send me a different PS3 but it will take several weeks (up to 7 weeks!) and I won't get a new one but a fixed one.

I have 2 weeks to send them my PS3 and after that my warrenty is over and they won't send me another one (unless I pay big bucks).

Any ideas????

Remco, have you tried a wired connection for your Playstation 3?

Is your computer in the same location as your Playstation 3? In other words, is the environment the same for the router to computer as it is for the router to the PS3?

Is your PC on when you're connecting to the PSN/attempting to download game updates? (Try shutting it off, if so, and see what impact this has, if any.)

Is your router open or secured down? It's possible your connection is being grabbed and used by others.

What's the error code you're getting?

Honestly, if you're able to download firmware and Store purchases, I'm not sure what your issue may be. If you're having connection issues, you should have them across the board.

There's quite a post on the Official PS boards: boardsus.playstation.com/.../message

There's also an entire board that's extremely helpful regarding these things: boardsus.playstation.com/.../board (If you have an error code, try searching for that first.)

At this point, I'd say dig into it a little further. I don't see this being an issue with your PS3, but ... it could just be. Honestly, you've got a weird little issue (which should be to your benefit if others have run into it as well).

If you think of it, please do post back what the issue was, or what you ended up doing.

Good luck,

~James

I have the same problem! I tried calling sony tech support but they only told me to change the port forwarding settings on my linksys wrt54g, but that didnt change anything. I even tried plugging the cable modem directly into the PS3. In both cases (wired and wireless) the internet browser worked fine as well as downloading stuff from PSN. But when i try to update Burnout Paradise or GTAIV i get a connection error after it gets anywhere from 1-30 percent. The port forwarding didnt change anything. And you would assume that by plugging the modem directly into the PS3 that port forwarding would be irrellevant.
I dont know what to do! Has anyone got a solution?

I have contacted my internet provider and they monitored my connection. It seems that my connection tops 125 db and they're gonna send a guy over to fix the signal. Don't know what that means, but they told me that it should be way lower that 125 db. It seems that my internet provider is to blame.

I'm going away for a few days so the provider guy is coming over next thursday. If he solves the problem, I'll be sure to post it here.

Thanks for the response, guys!!!

I have exactly the same issue as mentioned above by Remco and Adam.  I'm never able to get through a game update on my PS3.  The update always hangs at some percentage less than 30.  I have AT&T DSL service and a Linksys router.  I tried port forwarding, putting the PS3 in the DMZ, etc.  None of these changes made any difference whatsoever.  I'd like to know if Remco's line db reduction fixed the problem...

Thanks...

Dima in alaska

i have a linksys wrt54g v8.

i have done the following to make it work (yes, all updates download, all files download, i can play online)

linksys: as follows
DMZ - on - 192.168.1.15
upnp - OFF (this is very important)

ps3 (40gig): as follows
create custom connection and enter ALL data that is required. set the IP ADDRESS to 192.168.1.15 (or whatever number you chose for you DMZ on the linksys)
you have to know your
             subnet mask
             default router
             primary dns
             secondary dns

you can find ALL of this in your linksys options.

email me with questions at whispers16@gmail.com

i hope i didnt miss anything.

I was having the same problem as Remco. I tried following Dimas settings but I could not connect to the internet.

I did disable upnp on my router though and just did the easy setup on the ps3. the upnp failed but I was able to login to the playstation network and update gta4 without a problem.

I have the lynksys wrt54g version 8 router as well.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Dima in Alaska! I suffered from the same problem and I thought it was the network cable. That drove me nuts, because it caused me quite some problems to get it pulled through! Now it's working perfectly!

Dima's solution worked for me.  I changed the router DMZ and UPnP settings as described and then just chose easy/automatic setup on the PS3 and it works flawlessly.  I just picked up the new Call of Duty and was so IRRITATED when I already had to get an update on the day of release!  I also just moved and set up my wireless network a few days ago... I hadn't even realized that it was kicking all of my connections when connecting to the PS Network.  Thanks a bunch!

I would not Put my router in DMZ mode unless it is absolutely necessary
By doing this you will exposing your network to the entire internet.
I don't know why Dima didn't warn you all about DMZ.

This comes straight from the linksys DMZ description

The DMZ hosting feature allows one local user to be exposed to the Internet.

I'd just thought you all should be warned if ever your credit card or other personal information(banking, login passwords)in your computer becomes
other peoples business.

Use this setup but maybe change the IP address

linksys: as follows
DMZ - on - 192.168.1.15
upnp - OFF (this is very important)

Make sure that the security used is WPA on the router with AES encryption. When you then setup the wireless on the playstation you can do a custom setup. I have had no problems since

Hey guys, just a quick update that I found to be very useful for myself. If you hit up the Linksys site, there are often firmware upgrades for your router available. I was having the same issues with getting booted and the router restarting every time I turned on the ps3, connected to the PSN or generally did anything at all involving pressing buttons in the home screen. Either way, I upgraded my linksys wrt54g's firmware to the most recent one and am now getting full download speeds on wireless and patches are all actually downloading on top of the fact that I am not getting any more of those annoying restarts. There is an incredibly straightforward walk-through on the Linksys site for upgrading the firmware and it only took me about half an hour to get it up and running including setting up encryption. I'd highly recommend this and hopefully it works for you.
Best of luck.

Here's a link to the WRT54G downloads page (you'll just need to select your version): www.linksys.com/.../Satellite%2FLayout&cid=1166859837401&packedargs=sku%3DWRT54G&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=3740137401B01&displaypage=download

(If the link doesn't work, it's under Support > Technical Support > Choose a product > Wireless Routers > WRT54G )

I didn't find the firmware guide that Angus mentioned (if you a link, please post it).

I'm using the WRT54G2 wireless router and the at&t dsl gray motorola modem, my usual connection when I'm on the ps3 its 3 bars for call of duty games but as soon as someone else gets to use the internet in my desktop or in my laptop computer, my connection drops down to one bar and starts to lag badly. i would appreciate if anybody knows how to fix this or if anybody know of an internet provider that would let me use all 3 at the same time without dropping my connection because i'm getting tired of putting up with this. I've already changed my NAT type from a 3 to a 2 but nothing has changed.
