Waking Life: Chapter 19 - Wake Up!

Description: Script of the movie Waking Life, based on Tara Carreon's transcription, but with revisions based upon a viewing of the DVD version of the movie, which was watched with subtitles.

Notes: Special thanks to Andrew, Larry Redden, and Ed Sandberg for pointing out errors in Tara's transcription (numerous errors were fixed here, along with some scene information clarifications). Absolutely let me know if anything slipped by my look-over, especially in the quicker and the 'like, like, you know,' sections ;)

[19 Wake Up!]

Waking Life: Chapter 19 - Wake Up!(The main character wakes up, is seen walking down a couple streets, exquisite piano music is playing, he walks towards a house, checks the door, walks to the driveway where a car is parked. He looks up at the sky and starts to float upwards, tries to grab onto the car door handle, misses twice, keeps floating up and floats away to nothing.)

I expected for there to be  a long discussion about this scene here.

But...Maybe I'm the only one who hasn't figured it out yet.

Is he in a coma? is he dead? is the dream just continuing but the movie ending?

Not that it matters....

but....I'd like to know what other people think.

He is dead...he's been dead through the whole movie.

I believe the only time he will awaken is when he is reborn which may be when he wills himself to truly live again / awaken. What are your thoughts?

In this moment he recognizes that he truly is in the so called eternal moment that is life, and in finally 'saying yes' to being a part of that eternity, he lets go of his perceptual world(s) (both dream and waking) which is represented by him floating away into the unknown (i.e. nothing) as he becomes less and less recognizable from our point of view. It ends perfectly, in my opinion, simply because it leaves room for us all to theorize what happened. What is your right answer?
