Waking Life: Chapter 2 - Anchors Aweigh

Description: Script of the movie Waking Life, based on Tara Carreon's transcription, but with revisions based upon a viewing of the DVD version of the movie, which was watched with subtitles.

Revisions by James Richard Skemp III
This chapter last modified: October 21 2005

Notes: Special thanks to Andrew, Larry Redden, and Ed Sandberg for pointing out errors in Tara's transcription (numerous errors were fixed here, along with some scene information clarifications). Absolutely let me know if anything slipped by my look-over, especially in the quicker and the 'like, like, you know,' sections ;)

[2 Anchors Aweigh]

Waking Life: Chapter 2 - Anchors Aweigh(Main character walks through the airport and telephones his friend - 322.0031. There's a girl there, and he sees her.)

Hey man, it's me. Um, I just got back into town. I thought maybe I could bum a ride off you or something, but that's cool. I could probably just take a cab, something like that. Um -- Yeah, I guess I'll hang out with you later, something like that.

***

(A boat car drives up in front of the airport)

Ahoy there matey! You in for the long haul? You need a little hitch in your get-along, a little lift on down the line?

Oh, um, yeah, actually, I was waiting for a cab or something, but if you want to ...

All right. Don't miss the boat.

(He gets in.) Hey, thanks.

Not a problem. Anchors aweigh!

So what do you think of my little vessel? She's what we call "see-worthy." S-E-E. See with your eyes. I feel like my transport should be an extension of my personality. Voila. And this? This is like my little window to the world, and every minute it's a different show. Now, I may not understand it. I may not even necessarily agree with it. But I'll tell you what, I accept it and just sort of glide along. You want to keep things on an even keel I guess is what I'm saying. You want to go with the flow. The sea refuses no river. The idea is to remain in a state of constant departure while always arriving. Saves on introductions and good-byes. The ride does not require an explanation. Just occupants. That's where you guys come in. It's like you come onto this planet with a crayon box. Now, you may get the 8-pack, you may get the 16-pack. But it's all in what you do with the crayons, the colors that you're given. And don't worry about drawing within the lines or coloring outside the lines. I say color outside the lines. You know what I mean? Color right off the page. Don't box me in. We're in motion to the ocean. We are not landlocked, I'll tell ya that. So where do you want out?

Uh, who, me? Am I first? Um, I don't know. Really, anywhere is fine.

Well, just -- just give me an address or something, okay?

Uh --

Waking Life: Chapter 2 - Anchors Aweigh: Linklater without a head(The guy sitting next to him in the back seat speaks up) Tell you what, go up three more streets, take a right, go two more blocks, drop this guy off on the next corner.

Where's that?

Well I don't know either, but it's somewhere, and it's going to determine the course of the rest of your life. All ashore that's going ashore. Ha ha ha ha ha. Toot, toot.

***

(Main character gets out, sees a note on the ground, it says look to your right, and he does and gets hit by a car. He wakes up and gains colour, dresses, eats. Goes to class. Philosophy professor is lecturing.)

A few years ago in a Cultural Studies class, my friend and i used this scene as an example of Zen teachings during a short presentation.

Strangely, as peace-loving and non-threatening as the connotations of Zen are, and as closely as this particular friend tried to associate with those connotations (and the concepts presenting in this scene), this scene ends with the main character getting hit by a car and apparently killed. Going with this dude's flow meant flowing right into this one fellow's own demise.

Just to get it off my chest here, because the boat-driver in this scene does creep me out a bit, the friend of whom i speak has spent the last year harrying another friend of mine consistently to the point of her feeling desperation, so much so that i would label his actions as assaulting.

I guess what i'm getting at is posing the question of 'at what point does preaching 'peacefulness' (slash 'flow'; slash 'Zen; etc.) become destructive?' What about maybe suggesting these things rather than force feeding them, and then allowing the flow to happen for itself. Of course if going with the flow is working for you, you'd want others to find happiness doing the same... but is it not completely contradictory to push our friends into the water when their flows could be completely different and non-flowing??

I don't know if this makes any sense, just some ideas. :)

I completely agree with you! the thing is, it really takes a strong clarity to be able to allow people you care about experience their own "flow" while you yours, and if you care enough, being present when the help is asked for. If you really think about it, we were all born into different families, experienced different rises and falls growing up,and have different chemicals running at different times in our brain. How should we expect that our perception of reality is to be exactly like someone else? IT'S ABSURD!!! everything we know as "true", religion, government, social class, and marriage could simply be philosophies. We as the the ones flowing see what we choose to see, and it remains relevant to our experience of life. Now as far as energy work comes into the picture, you will receive the energy of the decisions you make, and it will never be "right" or "wrong", those are words based on the observers opinion on the matter. It just is.
did that make sense to you?
